Lyrically, this song is about as transparent as any of my songs have ever been, so the inspiration for it is fairly obvious. When I wrote the song, I halfway intended it to be a children's song, which is why the lyrics are a bit didactic and the music is sort of cutesy. At first, I thought the song was too cutesy, but Phil and Ryan (and Travis, our engineer) helped produce and arrange a recording that made the song sound a little more grown-up.
Speaking of the recording, this song features a lot of layers. We started by recording me and Phil singing and playing acoustic guitars live. Then we layered bass, mandolin, pedal steel, resonator guitar, and "group" claps and vocals. Recording the claps and vocals was a bunch of fun; Ryan, Phil, Travis, and I stood around a room mic and recorded a bunch of harmonized vocal tracks in order to create the sense that a big group of people were singing. ~ Kerry
