about

Late one night, I was fooling around with a bluesy chord progression and thinking about coal mining because I had just watched the film, Coal Miner's Daughter. I got curious about the various coal mining accidents that have occurred in the United States, so I did some informal Internet research and found this story: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1909_Cherry_Mine_disaster. I thought the story was worth re-telling, so I adapted it and three hours later I had a finished song.

The first two-thirds of this track features vocals by me and Phil that were recorded by running a Sure Green Bullet harmonica microphone through a Fender DeVille combo. We tried to make the first two-thirds of the song sound very old-timey and small to create a contrast with the thunderous bass and drums that introduce the final third of the song. Ryan's bass line really drives the rest of the song and is designed to grab the listener's attention and never let go. ~ Kerry
